Travel | Painted Canyon, Medora
Travel Photographer: Brittany Schnell
One of the things I love so much about my career is my opportunity to travel and see new places. While Medora isn’t exactly a long trip, there’s still much to explore.
Medora is about a two hour drive away from me to the northwest. Much of the surrounding area is part of either the Little Missouri National Grassland or Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The tiny town has a small population of 112 but is bursting with life during the summer months when the Medora Musical shows.
Many people come from all over to see the musical and explore the surrounding areas.
Today’s trip was a pre-family session trip. I packed up my car with my supplies and best friend, Olivia and hit the road.
Painted Canyon is a small canyon just off of I94. It has a couple trails that each take about 45-60 minutes to walk. Olivia and I explored the different trails before settling down at the foot of a butte to paint.
Oliva was wayy better prepared to paint. She had all her supplies: canvas, oil paint, linseed oil, pencil and paintbrushes.
I on the other hand had most of my painting supplies: I had my sketchbook, a pencil, paintbrushes, gouache (the paint) and NO WATER. If you know anything about painting with gouache you know you need water. Not only did I need water, but sand also got in my paints. Yeah, it was a mess
Eventually, I turned to playing my ukulele. The enjoyable day waned fast and slow all at the same time.
Olivia napped while I photographed my clients and we were on our way home.
We will go back. Maybe next September? Maybe next month. But I have absolutely fell in love with Medora and it’s surrounding area. I need to paint it, photograph it and serenade it.
Can we stop for a moment and bask in the glory that is Olivia’s painting. This lady is so talented and incredible. I’m blown away by her talent, drive and heart every day.
Go give Olivia some love on her Instagram or Facebook Page!! She’s been working on some amazing projects!!
